DreamKey Partners to provide much-needed assistance to eligible homeowners
CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 16, 2018 – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership, Inc. (DreamKey Partners) will provide assistance to homeowners in the completion of their low-income homestead exclusion or property tax deferment filings for the current tax year. The free clinics will be held in the Historic West End and Statesville Avenue Corridor with a focus on gentrifying neighborhoods. DreamKey Partners piloted this program in 2017 in two neighborhoods and is expanding it through the generosity of Bank of America as a recipient of its Neighborhood Builders grant.
“Many seniors and disabled individuals in our community have no idea that they could qualify for Mecklenburg County’s property tax relief program,” said Julie Porter, president of DreamKey Partners. “The program not only helps low-income individuals keep money in their pockets, but in some cases, helps them to avoid tax lien foreclosure in neighborhoods where property values have increased significantly due to gentrification.”
There are certain qualifications individuals must meet to be eligible. There is an income limit set annually by the NC Department of Revenue. The limit for 2018 is $29,500 for income received from all sources during the calendar year 2017. The applicant’s name must be on the deed or title to the home, and this must be the applicant’s primary residence.
Homeowners will be assisted by attorneys with Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy (formerly Legal Services of Southern Piedmont) and should bring the following documents with them to the clinics:
- Copy of 2017 federal tax return (for all individuals who are on the deed to the home)
- Pension statement
- SSI statement
- W2 or Paycheck stub
If homeowners are under 65 and disabled, they should bring the following:
- Certificate from a doctor or governmental agency stating that you are entirely or permanently disabled.
The property tax clinics are open to the public at the following dates, times and locations:
- April 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 3400 Beatties Ford Road;
