Property dedicated to The Honorable Charlie Dannelly, HUD Secretary Julián Castro to give remarks

CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 1, 2015 – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership (DreamKey Partners) is celebrating the opening of its newest property, The Dannelly at the Catawba, a community of senior apartment homes located on Mount Holly-Huntersville Road and within walking distance to the Catawba River. The 62-unit multifamily property is dedicated to The Honorable Charlie Smith Dannelly, former member of the North Carolina Senate representing District 38 from 1995-2013, and long-standing advocate of affordable housing in Charlotte and beyond.

“This follows our tradition of honoring individuals who have long advocated for affordable housing and the mission of our organization,” said Julie Porter, president of DreamKey Partners. “Senator Dannelly advocated for the creation of the partnership back in 1988 as a member of City Council and has continued to shine a light on the need for affordable housing throughout his career in the General Assembly. We have always been able to count on his support and knew he was just a call away.”

Construction for The Dannelly at the Catawba began in early 2014 by general contractor Carocon, with financing provided by Bank of America Merrill Lynch. NamourWright was the architect for the development and SL Nusbaum Realty is the property management company overseeing leasing for the community. The three-story building has one- and two-bedroom apartments for seniors ages 55+ and as of mid-March all units are already leased and occupied with new residents. In addition to the close proximity to the river, the property offers amenities including garden plots, library/computer room, large community room, 24-hour maintenance and smoke-free living.

The grand opening celebration will be held Thursday, April 2, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Various Housing Partnership staff/board representatives, housing advocates and community leaders will play a role in the dedication program and special recognition to Mr. Dannelly. Speakers include:

  • Julie Porter, DreamKey Partners
  • Pastor John Cleghorn, Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian Church
  • The Honorable Patsy Kinsey, City Council District 1
  • Steve Evans, North Carolina Housing Finance Agency
  • Darren Swanson, Bank of America

Additionally, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Julián Castro will give brief remarks at the program. For more information about The Dannelly at the Catawba, please visit thedannelly.com.
