Funds to increase affordable ownership options and rehab homes in the North End
CHARLOTTE, N.C., November 5, 2018 – Republic Services Charitable Foundation selected DreamKey Partners to receive one of its National Neighborhood Promise grants for $250,000 to support revitalization efforts in the North End.
“Through the National Neighborhood Promise program, Republic Services Charitable Foundation is committed to helping rebuild, revitalize and restore neighborhoods throughout the country,” said Kelly Hurter, senior manager, charitable giving at Republic Services. “Our goal is to help build stronger and healthier places and spaces where we live and work, and with crucial partners like DreamKey Partners, we believe we can make a meaningful and impactful difference in our neighborhoods.”
Funds will directly benefit the Druid Hills neighborhood in the North End Smart District. Planned activities include the construction of new homes for families earning 80 percent or less of Charlotte’s area median income. The funds will also be used for a rehab blitz that will provide free home repairs for owners in Druid Hills in late spring 2019. This would be the second rehab blitz completed by DreamKey Partners in the neighborhood. The first was in 2016 when free exterior repairs were completed on 25 homes by approximately 300 volunteers along with the construction of a community garden in the neighborhood park.

As part of its holistic approach to community development and neighborhood stabilization, The Housing Partnership has invested more than $4 million in grants and private equity into revitalization activities in Druid Hills over the past four years. Since 2015, 13 new single-family homes have been constructed in Druid Hills for low to moderate-income families with six more in the planning/pre-construction stage.
